A celebration of Freedom will take place at the Vigo County History Center on Sunday June 19, 2022 in honor of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to announce by executive decree and to
ensure that all enslaved people be freed.
Juneteenth became a nationally recognized holiday in June of 2021, but has been celebrated since the late 1800’s.
The History Center is proud of our local African American history and invites the public to join the celebration on June 19 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the History Center at 929 Wabash Avenue.
The free event will offer guided tours through the museum’s Black history exhibits as well as a historical production written by Crystal Mikell Reynolds PhD.
