If you’re looking for a fun adventure day, take the quick trip over to Casey, Illinois and check out all the “biggest things”. This little town has become famous thanks to James Bolin and is home to eight Guinness World Records for the world’s largest objects.
It all started with the wind chimes, which Bolin was easily able to build thanks to his family’s business, Bolin Enterprises, a paint and body shop-turned natural gas and oil pipe maintenance shop. Seeing that he could help attract business back to Casey, he started to build even more giant things, turning the town into what surely must be the world’s largest collection of world’s largest things.
One of the coolest things about Casey is that the community has come together to make as many massive objects as possible. They now have a dedicated “Big Things in a Small Town” Workshop, where the large things are actually built. They encourage tourists to stop by and see them at work. It’s no small feat to make a large object, so it’s a totally one-of-a-kind experience. According to reports, Bolin eventually plans to slow down on the large objects (one day) and turn the workshop into a place where people with disabilities and children can learn to make and maintain the large things. Here, you can also hop on a trolley tour that takes you around town to all of the giant objects! It’s free in the summer, on Saturdays between 10 AM and 2 PM.
We really enjoyed our time walking around this quaint town checking out all the large items, but also the cute shops! Behind the giant mailbox is an old time candy store that was the cutest! We picked up some “supplies” for our next adventure of the day and there’s also a really nice ice cream shop we obviously had to stop by. Our last adventure of the day took us over to Newton, IL where we enjoyed some amazing pizza at Joe’s Italian Foods and Pizza, which is located right on the square. After filling our bellies, we headed to Fairview Drive-In for some scary
movies. If you haven’t experienced a drive-in, I highly suggest you do so— it was so fun! If you have or have access to a truck, I suggest putting an air mattress in the bed and enjoying your movies that way!
So, if you’re looking for a fun day to spend with the girls or that special someone.. take the scenic route over to Illinois for something different, you won’t be disappointed! And as always, if you have any suggestions for us— send a message!
