It’s time to wine down after a busy weekend and take a look at a winery about an hour East of Terre Haute where you can stop and smell the rosé. Mallow Run Winery & The Sycamore at Mallow Run are located in Bargersville, Indiana on a beautiful country road with a scenic view just outside of Indianapolis.
The first grapes were planted in 2000, with more to follow in subsequent years. The vineyards now cover 8 acres of the family’s 600-acre farm. On the remainder, more than 50,000 bushels of corn and soybeans are still raised each year. With expanding vineyards taking root, an aging barn with great potential, and the desire to share their love of fine wines, the decision was quickly made to open their own winery right on the farm.
On September 3rd, 2005, the dream was realized and the tasting room opened to the public.
The tasting room is open everyday from 12pm-6pm and they offer complimentary wine tastings when you visit. The complimentary wine tasting includes a tasting of 6 wines, they make over 22, so choose wisely!
The inside space isn’t huge, so it doesn’t accommodate for huge groups in the Winter, but enjoy their wines outside this Spring & Summer at one of their many outdoor spots or bring a blanket to spread out on their lawn. They even have live concerts that take place behind their winery, complete with a stage and picnic tables. The tasting room is located in the hayloft of a nineteenth-century timber-frame barn built circa 1870 by George Mallow, owner Bill’s great-great-great grandfather. It is believed that much of the current barn may date back to an earlier barn, perhaps built in the 1830’s. A fire may have left the barn in disrepair, but many of the larger beams were recycled and used to build the “new” barn in the 1870’s. As you walk into the tasting room, you will be welcomed by these hand-hewn beams and feel a connection to those artisans of the past.I don’t really like Indiana sweet wines, but it won’t kill me to taste them. My favorite of the Mallow Run wines was the Traminette, it is a semi-sweet wine perfect for warm weather sipping. The tasting room also sells snacks, meats & cheeses, and wine gifts to take home.
Not only does Mallow Run have a winery & vineyard, but they also have an event space called The Sycamore at Mallow Run. They open it up for weddings, parties, or professional events. Not only is it an event space, they use it to host their own events. Whether its yoga, cork & canvas, sip & stitch, or piyo, they’ve got you covered.
If you are looking for a day trip, the Mallow Run Winery is a perfect spot to bring a picnic, purchase a bottle of wine, and enjoy the weather. Not sure about all that wine mixed with driving an hour back home? Check out Top Shelf Tours that features this winery as one of their destinations they stop at on their bus tour.
If you are looking for some new hot spots to hit up this Summer where you can enjoy the outdoors, I highly recommend checking out the Mallow Run Winery & making a day out of it.
Happy Drinking!
