Taste Terre Haute: Rick’s Smokehouse

Feelin’ SAUCY?! Stop by Rick’s Smokehouse in Terre Haute to snatch up some of the best BBQ on this side of the Wabash River. If BBQ isn’t your cup of tea, they also serve up other local favorites and their sides are drool worthy.

The owner Rick Burchell started off like most kids, following in their father’s footsteps. Originally working in construction, Rick had a change of heart and decided to dive into the BBQ business.  We are so happy he did because it led him to open his first brick and mortar restaurant on Wabash Avenue.  Rick’s Smokehouse is a huge part of the community even hosting several celebrities because of his award winning BBQ.

Taste Terre Haute has been running for two weeks; July 15th – July 28th.  The event will highlight a variety of restaurants in the Wabash Valley and showcase their unique offerings.  Every participant will be asked to offer a “deal” aka their own “taste” to diners, whether that is a special menu, free dessert, specialty cocktail, percentage off a meal; the specials are up to each individual restaurant.  Rick’s Smokehouse is a member of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and for Taste of Terre Haute they are offering a “Bigger than BBQ Bowl”. The bowl is made up of one side on the bottom with your pick of meat on top for $7.99, add another side on top for $1.

For those kicking carbs to the curb, this bowl is a perfect option. You get a sample of all the great sides mixed in with their savory BBQ. You honestly can’t go wrong with this deal. I had my BBQ bowl with their famous hashbrown casserole and baked beans.

Rick’s Smokehouse not only has some home-style food to fill your stomach, but the decor and collectibles in this place make it a museum of local history.  The restaurant spills over into what used to be known as The Wassell Inn dance hall popular in the 40’s and 50’s. You have to check out this famous Terre Haute landmark if you stop in for BBQ. The fully restored hall serves as their banquet hall that is perfect for any event or gathering.  The hall is filled with nostalgia and memorabilia from old schools in the area including Wiley, Gerstmeyer, Garfield, and Schulte. The atmosphere alone will take you back in time.

We would like to thank Rick from Rick’s Smokehouse for providing us with exceptional customer service and the opportunity to sample and taste some of their menu items.  We will be back to explore their menu and hope you all take advantage of this amazing event put on my the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce.
