Drink of the Month: Summertime Beers

Summer is officially upon us!  Okay, okay…maybe not officially, we still have a few more weeks before we get to June 22nd.  However, if my hair has been any indication we seemed to have skipped right over spring and have gone straight into sweltering summer.  That means more poolside weekends, leisure lake days, and all day cookouts.  And you can’t enjoy those things properly without a tasty beverage in hand, so it’s time to talk BEER.

We’ve shared plenty of crafty cocktail concoctions with you over the last few months.  That said, we’ve decided to shake things up for this June’s Drink of the Month and give you the skinny on some of our favorite new summertime beers.

Rhinegeist – Bubbles Rose Ale

Hailing from Cincinnati’s Rhine Brewery District, Rhinegeist dove into the art of cider making for a fun opportunity to play around with flavors more akin to wine then traditional beers.  Their Cidergeist line offers 3 different options to choose from; their Semi-Dry (hard cider), Dry Hopped (hard cider), and Bubbles (rose ale).  Melissa tried out their Bubbles Rose Ale at the Red Barn last week and gave nothing but rave reviews for this cider twist, and I for one can’t wait to enjoy it poolside!

Sun King Brewing – Freedom Rocks

Indy’s very own Sun King Brewing has the perfect way to kickoff summer with their new Session IPA Freedom Rocks.  Don’t put off checking this one out though, this is one of Sunking’s seasonal beers, so it’ll only be around through July.

Leinenkugel’s – Summer Shady

Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy is an oldie but a goodie.  It’s my go to for hot summer days outside, as it’s light and refreshing to drink.  This is a Weiss with some strong lemon notes.  So, if lemons not your thing, they have a full line of shandy flavors, including Harvest Patch (hello fall!).

Dogfish Head – Festina Peche

I’m on a sour kick and I just can’t stop!  Festina Peche from Dogfish Head is a Berliner weisse style beer that offers a tart twist on the summer – session – sour mash up.  It might not be for everyone (just like strong hoppy IPA aren’t for everyone) but if you are looking for something different to enjoy in this heat, give this beer a try at your next cookout event!

Flying Dog – Summer Seasonal

Flying Dog has a fun mixture of beers available to enjoy this summer.  How can you go wrong with a name like Summer Rental?  This radler is only available in the summer, so be on the lookout.  I couldn’t resist their Old Bay Summer Ale, this beer reminds you of ocean front crab boils mixed with your favorite wheat beer.  If a beer reminds of vacation, I’m sold!

Let us know what some of your FAVORITE summertime beers are in the comments below.

Cheers to the SUMMER!
