Drink of the Month

Drink of the Month:Spiked Mulled Cider

When October 31st first hits I start to get a little giddy.  And not for candy, costumes, and Halloween parties like you’d think.  Oh no, this girl gets all the warm feels because it officially acceptable to get excited for all my favorite food holidays.  With Thanksgiving around the corner (is it seriously just weeks away?) I start planning out my menu now.  One trick I’ve learned over the years is tensions can rise in the kitchen on the big day, so I try to keep the liquid libations flowing to keep everyone at ease.

This year I wanted to mix it up from your variety of wine and booze and make something everyone can enjoy.  This Spiked Mulled Cider is the dish everyone’s going to be talking about and the perfect November Drink of the Month.

Okay, let’s talk terms here…mulled cider. So, a mulled drink is just a drink that has been made with mulling spices.  You know all those delicious smells that always remind you of fall and the holidays?  You can usually find those spices in mulling spice mixes and you can find them here in this drink too!

-Cinnamon

-Clove

-Nutmeg

-Star Anise

-Peppercorn

Mulling spices are usually seen in hot apple cider drinks or mulled wine (hmm…hint at where the name came from). I went for combining the two and giving it a little extra kick with some Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. I had all of these spices on hand, so to bring out their natural oils and enhance the flavor I toasted them in a dry pan for about 5 minutes before adding it to the liquid to simmer on low. If you’re in a hurry, or want to make this dish even easier, skip this step. You can throw all the spices in whole and you’ll still get all their wonderful flavors!

So bust out the glasses and get ready for some smells (oh the smells!) and enjoy!
